When we installed our first courtyard fountain in 1999, it was a simple stone creation in a Sundar Nagar home. The client’s only request was “something traditional, like my grandfather had.” Fast forward to last month, when a Gurugram homeowner asked for a water feature she could control from her phone while traveling. This journey from traditional to smart tells the story of how Delhi NCR’s lifestyle has transformed over two decades.

The Early Days: 1999-2005

Our first projects were mostly about preserving tradition. In Old Delhi havelis and South Delhi bungalows, clients wanted fountains that looked like they’d always been there. I remember an elderly client in Civil Lines saying, “Make it look like it was built with the house in 1940.”

Back then, our biggest challenges were:

  • Finding craftsmen who could work with traditional stone
  • Matching decades-old fountain designs
  • Installing modern pumps without disturbing original structures

The Farmhouse Revolution: 2005-2010

As Chattarpur and Westend developed, suddenly we were creating water features bigger than some apartments. A client memorably told us, “I want my guests to say ‘wow’ before they reach the front door.”

This era brought:

  • Musical fountains becoming weekend entertainment
  • Living rooms opening into water courtyards
  • The first requests for swimming pools that “looked natural”

The Corporate Years: 2010-2015

When Gurgaon’s skyline started rising, our designs had to reach higher too. Office complexes wanted statements. “Our fountain should be visible from the highway,” became a common brief.

One tech company CEO told us, “We’re competing with Bangalore for talent. Our water feature should show we’re world-class.” This led to:

  • Multi-story water walls in lobbies
  • Features that displayed company logos
  • Low-maintenance designs for 24/7 operation

The Green Revolution: 2015-2019

Environmental consciousness changed everything. A Noida client challenged us: “I want a water feature, but I don’t want to waste water.” This sparked our journey into:

  • Rainwater harvesting integration
  • Solar-powered systems
  • Water recycling technologies

An architect in Greater Noida summed it up: “Luxury now means responsible luxury.”

The Smart Era: 2020-Present

The pandemic changed how people viewed their homes. A Gurgaon client recently said, “I spend more time in my garden now than in my living room. Make it special.”

Today’s requests often include:

  • Mobile app controls
  • Features that create perfect Zoom backgrounds
  • Water walls that double as outdoor cinema screens
  • Child-safe interactive elements

Cultural Shifts We’ve Witnessed

 From Status to Wellness

In 1999, clients wanted to impress neighbors. Now they talk about stress relief and family time. A recent client in Vasant Kunj said, “I don’t care how it looks from the road. I want to hear the water from my work-from-home setup.”

Community Changes

Remember when every farmhouse wanted a separate entrance fountain? Now we’re designing central features where families gather. A Noida Extension community recently converted their decorative fountain into a children’s water play area.

Size Perspectives

Bigger isn’t automatically better anymore. A DLF Phase 5 homeowner recently requested “something subtle and elegant” where years ago they might have wanted the biggest feature on the block.

Surprising Trends We’ve Seen

The Return to Natural

Despite smart technology, there’s growing demand for natural-looking features. A Greater Noida architect recently requested, “Make it look like a mountain stream, but with WiFi control.”

Multi-Purpose Spaces

Modern clients want water features that do more. A recent project in Gurugram includes a water wall that becomes a movie screen and a fountain that becomes a kids’ play area.

Sound Design

“Can you make it sound like the stream I heard in Manali?” is a request we get more often than you’d expect. People are increasingly specific about water sounds.

Learning from Changes

These 24 years have taught us that:

  • Every design trend reflects social change
  • Technology should enhance, not complicate
  • The best features grow with families
  • Water’s calming effect is timeless

What’s Next?

We’re seeing early signs of new trends:

  • Garden office water features
  • Therapeutic water spaces
  • Educational water installations in schools
  • Climate-adaptive designs

The Constants

While styles change, some things remain constant:

  • The joy on a child’s face seeing their first fountain
  • The peace people find in water sounds
  • The way water brings families together
  • The pride of creating something lasting

A Personal Note

Looking back, each design shift taught us something valuable. But perhaps the most important lesson came from a client’s 80-year-old grandmother. Sitting beside her restored haveli fountain, she said, “Some things shouldn’t change. Water has always told our stories.”

As we look to the future, we’re excited to see what stories Delhi NCR’s water features will tell next.

Green Evolutions has been witnessing and shaping the evolution of water features across Delhi NCR since 1999, adapting to changing times while preserving timeless elegance.
